Fully rounded research programs in the biological sciences ask four questions, concerning function, mechanism, development, and phylogeny, which mutually inform each other. The same approach is needed for all human-related subjects, including compassion and altruism.
Emiliana Simon-Thomas from Stanford's Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education makes the case that compassion is good for you, taking into consideration studies of neural activation associated with emotional and cognitive processes that play a role in compassionate responding.

Jon Kabat-Zinn’s life work has been largely dedicated to bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine and society. Kabat-Zinn is the author or co-author of many scientific papers on mindfulness and its clinical applications. He has written two bestselling books: Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness (Delta, 1991), and Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life (Hyperion, 1994). Kabat-Zinn has made significant contributions to modern health care with his research which focused on mind/body interactions for healing, and on various clinical applications of mindfulness meditation training for people with chronic pain and/or stress-related disorders.
Teacher Certification Program
CCARE’s Compassion Training Teacher Certification program is a part-time, 12-month training for professionals who want to deepen their ability to share the science, philosophy, and pedagogy of compassion. Graduates, who fulfill all program requirements, including a period of supervised teaching, will be certified to teach CCARE’s Compassion Training Course. The Compassion Training Course is 9-week program developed by a team of psychologists, scientists, and contemplative scholars at Stanford University.

Stanford's Compassion Training Class is a nine-week course designed to develop the qualities of compassion, empathy, and kindness for oneself and for others. CTC integrates traditional contemplative practices with contemporary psychology and scientific research on compassion. The program was developed at Stanford University by a team of contemplative scholars, clinical psychologists, and researchers.

Facebook wants to grow more heart. The social media giant copes with a flood of complaints about objectionable photos, bullying hateful comments and other postings. The company doesn't release data on complaints, but it is a "huge volume," said Travis Bright, a product manager for site integrity. Facebook invited national experts to its Palo Alto campus to share the science behind compassion and altruism. In the audience, engineers listened intently to ideas about humanizing interactions.
