Free the Mind, a documentary by award-winning documentary filmmaker Phie Ambo, follows an innovative research study on on breathing practices, yoga and meditation for OIF/OEF veterans with combat trauma, and a study on mindfulness practices for children.
“Thank you for giving me my life back.” “I feel like I’ve been dead since I came back from Iraq and I feel like I’m alive again.” These are the words veterans recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan who participated in the ground-breaking study portrayed in the film.
In 1992 Professor Richard Davidson, one of the world’s leading neuroscientists, met the Dalai Lama, who encouraged him to apply the same rigorous methods he used to study depression and anxiety to study compassion and kindness, those qualities amplified by Tibetan meditation practice. The results of Davidson’s studies at the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, are portrayed in FREE THE MIND as they are applied to treating PTSD in returning Iraqi vets and children with ADHD. The film asks two fundamental questions: What is a thought and how does it create a manifestation in the body? And can we make a physical change of the brain only by the power of thought?
Free the Mind has received critical acclaim in Europe and the May 17th Stanford screening will be its West Coast premier.
The researcher, Emma Seppala, Associate Director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education and head scientist of the veteran study in the Free the Mind documentary will be discussing her findings after the study. A veteran who participated will also be present to answer questions and share his experience.
Free the Mind has very limited distribution, and this is one of the few film screenings to take place. Click here to watch the trailer, one of the top ten most popular trailers on Itunes last week.
