What progress is being made toward conceptualizing and adopting the social values of good, compassionate societies? What cross-national indicators are available for comparing societies and regional units in terms of generosity, social justice, harmonious interaction, and other social characteristics related to compassion? Does ecological compassion align with the degree of suffering? Are those with low or high socio-economic status more likely to be compassionate? To what extent is American generosity, in terms of charity and volunteering, a myth?
